日系アメリカ人の歴史を語る上では欠かせない日系一世、藤井整の伝記『羅府ぎぎゅう音頭- 排日土地法を葬った藤井整の記録』の英訳版書籍“A Rebel’s Outcry”が2021年11月に出版された。英訳を、ロサンゼルス校で実務翻訳クラスの講師を務める比嘉・ディッキンソン・佐恵子さんが手掛けている。
In the history of Japanese Americans, it is impossible to omit Sei Fujii. His biography, “A Rebel’s Outcry”, will be released in November 2021. Saeko Higa Dickinson, who teaches at JVTA Los Angeles, translated the book into English.
 

 

藤井整は、1882年に山口県で生まれ、1903年に南カリフォルニア大学の留学生として渡米。1931年に、日系一世のための日本語新聞を刊行する加州毎日新聞を設立した。さらに、日系人に土地の所有権を勝ち取り、日系病院の設立に尽力するなど日系コミュニティに偉大な功績を残す。
Fujii was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in Southern Japan in 1882. In 1903, he came to the United States as an international student at the University of Southern California, where he graduated from Law School. In 1931, he established a newspaper for the Japanese American community, called The Japan California Daily News. Also, he contributed to the Japanese immigrant community by fighting for their right to purchase land and establish hospitals in Los Angeles.
 

2012年には、藤井整を描いた短編映画『Lil Tokyo Reporter』が公開された。監督を務めたのは中国系アメリカ人三世のジェフリー・チン氏。2021年11月に出版された書籍の英訳版制作にはプロデューサーとして関わっている。
In 2012, a short film titled “Lil Tokyo Reporter” about Sei Fujii was released. It was directed by Jeffrey Gee Chin, a Chinese American director, who is also a producer of the translation and adapted publication of “A Rebel’s Outcry.”

映画監督で本のプロデューサーでもあるジェフリー・チン監督と翻訳者の比嘉・ディッキンソン・佐恵子さんに、日系人の歴史や書籍の英訳プロジェクトについてお話を伺うことができた。記事の前編では、アジア系移民の歴史に興味を持ったきっかけや短編映画『Lil Tokyo Reporter』の制作についてチン監督に語っていただいた。
JVTA interviewed Jeffrey and Saeko about the history of Japanese Americans, the story behind adopting the book project, and more. During Part 1 of the interview, Jeffrey shared how he became interested in Asian immigrant history and the background of making “Lil Tokyo Reporter.”

JVTA　英訳の依頼が来た時はどう思いましたか？
JVTA: What did you think when you first heard about the translation project?
 

ディッキンソンさん　リトル東京サービスセンターと歴史協会の創設者、ビル・ワタナベ氏から日系一世の活動家についての英訳に興味があるかと電話をいただきました。気軽な気持ちで引き受けましたが、私は日本語ネイティブなので、英訳は大変だろうなと思いました。また、当時は、こんなにも長いプロジェクト(約10年）になるとは想像がつきませんでしたね。
Saeko: Bill Watanabe, a founder of the Little Tokyo Service Center and the Little Tokyo Historical Society, gave me a cold call and asked me if I’d be interested in translating the book about the Japanese civil rights activist. I accepted without much thought. But I thought it would be challenging to translate the book into English because I’m a Japanese native. Also, I never imagined at that time that it would be such a long journey.
 

JVTA　英訳プロジェクトはどのように進んだのですか？
JVTA: What was the process like to translate the book?
 
ディッキンソンさん　英訳を進めるにあたり膨大なリサーチが必要でした。本の共同プロデューサーのキャロル藤田氏が偶然にも近所に住んでいたこともあり、スムーズにコミュニケーションを取ることができました。藤田氏は、原作『羅府ぎぎゅう音頭- 排日土地法を葬った藤井整の記録』の作者である佐藤健一先生からいただいた資料をはじめ、藤井整にまつわる膨大な資料を保管しています。翻訳作業中に疑問が浮かべば、彼女の自宅に行って、資料を参考にすることもできました。
Saeko: It took a great deal of research to translate the book. Carole Fujita, a co-producer of the book, happened to live in my neighborhood, and that made it so much easier for me to communicate with her. She has tons of historical documents that she has accumulated, including materials used for the original Japanese book, “Rafu Gigyu Ondo,” by Kenichi Sato. Whenever I came across questions, I was able to drive to Carole’s house and look through the materials for translation.

JVTA 翻訳で難しかったことは何ですか？
JVTA: What was the most challenging thing about translating the book?
 
ディッキンソンさん　伝記の翻訳なので、事実確認が大変でした。チン監督と一緒に歴史について事実確認をしに、UCLAの図書館に足を運ぶこともありました。また、原作本は日本語ですが、参考資料は英語のため、単純に英訳すればいいということでもなく、実際の資料から引用が必要な場合もありました。事実確認ができる証拠を見つけた時は宝物を見つけたみたいに嬉しかったです。藤井がカトリック教会の司祭宛てに書いた、強制収容所に収容された日系アメリカ人に助けの手を差し伸べてほしいと懇願する内容の手紙を見つけたこともありました。藤井自身がタイプした手紙の原本が見つかったときは、興奮しました！
Saeko: Since the book is a biography, the fact checking is the most difficult thing in the adaptation process. Especially, Also, Jeffrey and I went to the archives at the UCLA library and looked through them to determine the history. Another difficulty is that the original book is written in Japanese, but the resources are in English. In that case, I could not use my own words, but instead had to find the actual quotes for the book. However, it was an amazing experience when I could find a piece of evidence. For example, I was even able to find the actual letter that Sei Fujii wrote to a Catholic priest, pleading for him to help Japanese people in the internment camps. It was so exciting to find the draft letter typed by Sei Fujii with many corrections he made. Finding such a precious record was a eureka moment for me.
 

JVTA 戦前・戦後の時代の出来事なので古い日本語を理解したり、情報をまとめたりするのは難しかったのではないでしょうか？
JVTA　Since the event happened around the time of World War II, I can imagine it took a lot of effort to understand the old Japanese and gather source material. How was it?
 
ディッキンソンさん　原文には、言葉の意味や読み方が分からない古い日本語もありましたが、日本語や歴史について学ぶことができましたよ。この本は、藤井が創設した加州毎日新聞からの記事を集めたものでもあるので、チャプターごとにまとめる作業が必要でした。チン監督と藤田氏と一緒に悩みながら、流れが自然になるように本の編集作業にも取り組みました。幸運にも、著名な日系人作家、ナオミ・ヒラハラ氏が編集してくださったので、読みごたえのある作品になっていいると思います。プロの作家はやはりスゴイです。
Saeko: There were some words I’d never come across. Also, it includes old Japanese that I even didn’t know how to read. But I was able to learn a lot of vocabulary and history. The book is an anthology of articles carried in the California Daily News (Kashumainichi). So not all the chapters were coherent and connected. Jeffrey, Carol, and I had to rack our brains on how to organize the chapters to make it sound more coherent. To our forturne, a renowned Japanese American novelist Naomi Hirahara edited the book in the end, so the book came out really great. I was so impressed by her professional writing skills.
 

 

JVTA　 翻訳者が本のプロデューサーと一緒に作業を進めるのは珍しい経験だったと思います。いかがでしたか？
JVTA: It’s a rare experience for translators to work with producers. How was it working with Jeffrey?
 

ディッキンソンさん　ジェフリーは中国系アメリカ人なので、日本にルーツがない彼がなぜ日系人に興味があるのか疑問を持つ人もいます。しかし、民族性に関係なく、彼は日系コミュニティに多大な貢献をしてくれています。歴史協会のメンバーは、若さと情熱に溢れるチン監督が大好きなんです。
Saeko: As you know, Jeffrey is a Chinese American. Some people wonder why he is interested in Japanese American history, even though he is not of Japanese descent. But he contributes so much to our community regardless of his ethnicity. So much that everyone at the Historical Society loves him and his youthful enthusiasm.
 

JVTA 　受講生に書籍翻訳についてのアドバイスをいただけますか？
JVTA: Any advice or tips about the book translation for our students?
 

ディッキンソンさん　リサーチしたつもりでも、思い込みによる間違いをしてしまうこともあります。翻訳作業中に、名字の読み方が正しいと思い込んでしまっていたことがありましたが、チン監督や藤田さんが、確認してくれたことことで、間違いに気づけたんです。彼らのような細やかな人がいると助かりますね。
Saeko: My advice to my students is that when you work on fact checking, sometimes you can make mistakes due to your own bias. I was bothered by my bias about how to read Japanese last names. But Jeffrey asked me if the name were being translated correctly, and it turned out a few were wrong. It’s good to have someone very detailed oriented person like Ms. Fujita and Jeffrey.
 

 

JVTA　リサーチしながら書籍の制作と翻訳を進めていったとのことですが、今回、藤井整について新しい発見はありましたか？
JVTA: Did you discover anything new about Sei Fujii during this project?
 

チン監督　山口高校を訪れた際に、藤井が在学していた年の卒業アルバムを見つけました。そこには高校を退学したと記載されていたんです。当時、山口県は政治において重要な役割を果たしていたので、藤井の祖父は、彼に政治家になってほしかったようです。藤井は、祖父への反抗心で、あえて退学したようですね。
Jeffrey: I went to Yamaguchi High School, and I found the yearbook of the high school that Sei Fujii attended. It showed that he had failed out of high school. In Japan, Yamaguchi Prefecture was very prominent in politics, so his grandfather wanted him to become a politician. He was being rebellious to his own grandfather, so he purposely failed out of high school.
 

JVTA 　藤井は、英語教育や海外留学関連の有識者とも関わりがあったようですね？
JVTA: It seems Sei Fujii was related to the educators who developed English study in Japan and who also encouraged study abroad. Could you tell me more about that?
 

チン監督　藤井は、明治時代の英語教育者、神田乃武から指導を受けました。神田乃武は、英語の教科書や辞書を編集するなど日本の英語教育に貢献した人物で、初代文部大臣、森有礼から指導を受けています。さらに、藤井家は、八幡製鐵所とも関りがありました。藤井は、将来は教育や政治分野で活躍することを期待されていたようですが、本人は、自立した道を歩みたかったようです。
Jeffrey: Fujii was mentored by Baron Naibu Kanda who was an English language educator during the Meiji era. Kanda contributed to the Japanese learning English through making an English dictionary and textbook, and he was also mentored by Arinori Mori, who was the first Ministry of Education and the founder of Japan’s modern educational system. Moreover, the Fujii family had a connection with Yahata Steel Company, which was very powerful in Japan at that time. Sei Fujii’s family wanted him to become a politician or educator, but he wanted to follow his own path.

JVTA 　最後に読者の方にメッセージをお願いします。
JVTA: Any messages for Japanese Americans and people in Japan?
 

チン監督　この本はただ本棚を埋めるだけの一冊ではなく、会話を始めるきっかけになってほしいという思いで作りました。すでに多くの日系アメリカ人の皆さんは日系コミュニティにプライドを持っていると思いますが、その経験をシェアしてほしいですね。私たちの先祖がいかに複雑かつ美しい人生を歩んできたか知っていただきたいです。我々にとって大変な時期ではありますが、アジア系アメリカ人としてのアイデンティティを誇りに思うべきです。それこそ、アジア系アメリカ人のルーツを誇りに思うことは、“アメリカ人”ではないという意味ではありません。また、日本の皆さんには、藤井のような人物を知ることで、世界が繋がっていることを示せたと思います。今は、海外旅行をしたり、留学したりする人が増えてきているので、より多くの人が世界が繋がっていることを意識できていますね。私自身も日本を訪れた経験から、異文化に対して素晴らしいと思うようになりました。お互いの文化を共に称えることができればと思います。
Jeffrey: We designed the book not to just fit in someone’s bookshelf, but to open a conversation. I want Japanese Americans to share the sense of pride for their community, which many of them already do. But I want to show them how beautiful and complex the lives of their ancestors were. I know it’s challenging for the Asian American community now, but we should feel proud of our Asian American identity. That’s part of our American experience, and it doesn’t make us any less American to celebrate our history. Also, I would like to tell people in Japan that learning about people like Sei Fujii shows how interconnected we are as a world. I think that the more people travel and study overseas, the more they’ll get to understand that we all these interconnected relationships. From my own experience spending time in Japan, I have been very appreciative of the culture and the generosity of everyone there. I think that we can all share the excitement and enthusiasm of having a mission together to celebrate culture.
 

ディッキンソンさん　先駆者がしてきたことを振り返り、彼らの努力や犠牲に対して感謝することが大切です。アメリカで初めて日系病院が設立された時は、スペイン風邪が流行していました。コロナウィルス感染症が起きている現在に通じるものがありますね。当時の日系移民は、彼らがどんな治療を受けられるか分からなかったので、それを考えると、いかに大変だったか共感できるかと思います。その他に私が伝えたいメッセージは、私たち自身が歴史であり、私たちが歴史を作っているということです。教科書にはたくさんの偉人が載っていますが、ヒーロー達の周りには、彼らを支えた人々も存在していて、彼らも歴史を築いてきた一員です。藤井について知ることで、私の故郷、沖縄出身の偉人、仲村権五郎氏のことを知りました。藤井整の親友です。そのご親族にも会いましたよ。全ての人々は社会に欠かせない一員であり、皆が歴史を築いていることに感謝すべきだと思います。
Saeko: It’s important for us to look back at what the pioneers have done, and understand we are really indebted to all their efforts and sacrifice. In fact, the first official Japanese hospital was established in the middle of the Spanish Flu. So that resonates with the COVID-19 pandemic right now. At that time, Japanese immigrants didn’t know what kind of medical treatment they were able to get, so just think about it and we can sympathize how hard it was for them. Another message that I would like to tell is that history is people and people make history. There are many heroes in textbooks, but there are also others around them, and those people also helped make the history. As I learned about Sei Fujii, I also got to learn about another important figure, Gongoro Nakamura who was from my hometown, Okinawa, and I was able to meet his relatives. He was a best friend of Sei Fujii. All these people who dedicated themselves to their society came together to make history and we should all appreciate that.
